Not So Different After All: Results from the First IUCN Red List Assessment for North American Lichens Dispel the Myth that Fungi Cannot be Conserved. Lichens are symbioses formed primarily by fungi and algae that are ecologically important and threatened by diverse forces worldwide. Conservation of these organisms has long been hampered by a widespread perception that 1) species are poorly known and cannot be readily identified, 2) threats to species are poorly documented, and 3) clear actions to effect conservation are lacking or impossible to implement. We will present the results of the first IUCN Red List assessment workshop for North American lichens, one major step towards bridging the fungal conservation gap. These results will be placed in the broader context of conservation efforts for other groups of organisms, and used to dispel the myth that fungi are unknowable, unidentifiable, and impossible to conserve.
