Abstract Detail
Teaching Section Metsger, Deborah [1]. The Role of Herbaria in Developing Species Identification and Awareness Products. Biodiversity protection is a focal point not only for academic institutions but also for governmental and non-governmental organizations. This has created an insatiable demand for tools that support species identification and awareness – from casual identification of trees in a Park to the management of significant biodiversity reserves. Herbaria have an important role to play in the development of these tools that includes using the resources of the collection, quality control and standardization. The ROM’s Green Plant Herbarium works with partners to develop products that include accurate, current, botanical content. The ROM Fieldguide to the Butterflies of Ontario (2014) cites food plants and recommends native plants for gardens. Collaboraion with the City of Toronto led to the development of online interactive tree species pages and tree plaques with qrl’s to link back. Specimen data from the City of Kawartha Lakes Flora Project have generated standardized inventories for Nature Conservancy of Canada properties and target species lists for bioblitzes, Georeferenced herbarium specimens of Ontario trees are being used to create distribution maps for a new ROM Fieldguide to the Trees of Ontario. These data are exposing differences in previously published species limits. Log in to add this item to your schedule
