Biogeography Lee, Joon Seon [1], Kim, Seung-Chul [2]. A Deep Divergence of Intercontinental Disjunct Genus Symplocarpus (Araceae) Corresponding to the Two Different Ploidy Levels. Intercontinental disjuct distribution between eastern Asia (EA) and eastern North America (ENA) have attracted numerous phytogeographers in order to understand the evolutionary diversification within the Northern Hemisphere. Determining the phylogeny and biogeography of genus Symplocarpus, one of the well-known models of this pattern, is crucial. Previous studies have focused on determining this disjunct pattern and its timing but suffer from insufficient sampling of the global distribution of the genus. Here we sample 163 accessions from 80 populations, including two recently described species (S. egorovii and S. nabekuraensis). Using six highly informative cpDNA markers, we estimated divergence time and explored the phylogenetic and the biogeographic history of the genus. We found a deep split into two major clades within the genus corresponding to ploidy level (tetraploid vs. diploid). The tetraploid clade comprises S. renifolius in Japan and Russia, S. nabekuraensis and S. foetidus, whereas the diploid clade consists of S. nipponicus, S. egorovii and S. renifolius in Korea. S. renifolius is polyphyletic (different origins in Korea and in Japan), and has distinct morphological characteristics (e.g. chromosome numbers, spathe color, and spadix shape). S. egorovii was deeply embedded within the diploid S. renifolius clade with identical morphology, suggesting that they should be considered as conspecies. The species S. nabekuraensis and S. renifolius in EA share a common ancestor with S. foetidus in ENA. The crown age of the genus was estimated to be 24.93 Mya (95% HPD: 15.13–34.49 Mya). The origin of the intercontinental distribution is suggested to be EA, and the migration occurred from EA to ENA during mid Miocene. Log in to add this item to your schedule
