Water macrophytes from Camalaú reservoir (Cariri Ocidental, Paraíba – Northeast, Brazil). Studies related to the characterization of aquatic macrophytes have been developed progressively since the end of the twentieth century. However, researches with floristic focus on reservoirs of the semi-arid region in Brazil, have little approach in the scientific literature. Aquatic macrophytes are used as biological indicators of water quality, fertilizers, food and shelter for animals. These plants have their habitat in natural and artificial lakes used for public supply, occupying several tracks in the water column and at the edges of these ecosystems. In this work was developed collecting, pressing, drying and herborization of aquatic plant species collected in Camalaú reservoir, city of Camalaú/PB, with capture of fertile material, where they were pressed and taken to the kiln for drying. It was later made the taxonomic description of the species present in the environment. The reservoir is located in the Caatinga ecosystem, Cariri Paraibano, in the Bacia do rio Alto ParaÃba, with semi-arid climate and now this ecosystem is suffering intense process of desertification, a large part caused by deforestation of the native vegetation for pasture use for livestock. Today the reservoir is used to supply purposes, fish farming, fishing and irrigation. It was identified 17 botanical families, 24 genders, 25 species and there was a prevalence of the geographical pattern of cosmopolitan species in detriment of the native species, which only amounted to three species: Cordialâ€Â¯eucocephala,â€Â¯Herissantiaâ€Â¯tiubae and Sidaâ€Â¯galheirensis. Malvaceae was the most representative floristic component. The most significant form of life was amphibious. The work also presents a scheme with morphological description of the species collected.
