Candida spp. molecular epidemiology and antifungal resistance of Candida spp. isolated from HIV/AIDS patients. Oropharyngeal candidiasis is the most frequent opportunistic infection found in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients. Routine use of prophylactic treatments in patients with oral candidiasis can generate resistance, especially to azolic antifungals. There has been some effort to quantify the candidiasis and antimicotic resistance problem in Mexico, however, the total magnitude of the problem is unknown. The objective of this work was to identify the species diversity of the genus Candida through molecular methods such as PCR-RFLP and determine the prevalence of resistance to conventional antifungals from species isolated from HIV/AIDS patients. A mouthwash sample was obtained from 300 patients to whom a questionnaire was also applied. Organisms were isolated and identified from the mouthwash samples. Antifungal resistance was measured using antibiograms with sensidiscs. Drugs tested were itraconazole, fluconazole, miconazole, clotrimazole, kenotonazole and nystatin. 58% of patients were Candida carriers of which 90% belong to Candida albicans, 4% to Candida tropicalis, 2% to Candida parapsilosis, 2% to Candida glabrata and 2% to Candida spp. Concerning antifungal resistance, 2% to 14% presented dose-dependent resistance and 2% to 6% were totally resistant to some antifungal. The highest resistance was to fluconazole and ketoconazole. The least resistance was observed with the polyene nystatin. Log in to add this item to your schedule
