Pteridological Section/AFS Farrar, Donald R. [1], Stensvold, Mary C. [2], Dauphin, Benjamin [3]. Differentiation through genome partitioning and intragametophytic selfing. The Botrychium lunaria clade includes six diploid taxa distributed in cool temperate climates of the northern hemisphere. Taxa are differentiated by morphology, range and habitat, and by unique genetic profiles. Each is characterized by exceptionally low genetic variability, presumably due to reliance on intragametophytic selfing, as reported by all published genetic analyses of Botrychium and other Ophioglossaceae with bisexual underground gametophytes. The opposite of this pattern, outbreeding and high genetic diversity, exists in newly discovered populations of B. lunaria in the Swiss Alps. As these populations include nearly all of the alleles characterizing the B. lunaria clade, it appears to represent the probable ancestral condition from which all taxa of the clade have been derived. Mechanisms for this diversification suggest a previously underappreciated role of intragametophytic selfing. Log in to add this item to your schedule
