The Mitreola petiolata (Loganiaceae) complex: cryptic species revealed with DNA and micromorphological data. Mitreola petiolata (J.F. Gmel) Torrey & A. Gray (Loganiaceae) is a widespread annual herb in the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, southeast Asia, tropical Africa, and northern Australia. The type specimen of M. petiolata is from South Carolina and corresponds to the North American form, which is also found in the Caribbean and south to Guatemala. The other two forms appear to be sympatric throughout much of Central America and South America, with only one form wide ranging in the paleotropics. DNA data reveal three distinct clades of M. petiolata corresponding to the morphological forms (based on inflorescence structure, fruit shape, and seed morphology), but also including the North American species M. sessilifolia (J.F. Gmel) G. Don within this complex. Log in to add this item to your schedule
