Types of bioreactors used for in vitro plant propagation.

Micropropagation is a widely accepted application of plant biotechnology for large scale production of crop plants. In general, micropropagation by conventional techniques using semi-solid gelled media is reducing because of high labor costs. Various workers have developed several liquid media immersion systems for micropropagation. Vitrification of the tissues, when cultured on liquid medium was observed as the major disadvantage. Various Bioreactor systems have been developed to control this. Bioreactors are self contained vessels providing maximum opportunity for monitoring and control over micro environmental conditions. Airlift type bioreactor system, bubble column bioreactors, bottom-type bubble bioreactors (BTBB) has been designed. Later to improve the size of bubbles, stirred tank bioreactors (STR) designed. Recently temporary immersion bioreactor (RITA) has been described for commercial micropropagation. It has the advantage of short term exposure of growing cultures to the medium holding the explants apart from the agitator. This system completely eliminated the step sub-culturing which is labor intensive .This system was employed basically to ornamental plants and later it has been extended to various crops such as potato, oil palm, banana etc. including medicinal and aromatic plants. Recently it has been used in berry crops including strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and cloudberry. The research on bioreactor systems in lingonberry is in progress when a number of wild clones, cultivars and hybrids are being studied.
