Conference Wide Howard, Ronald James [1]. Commercial Greenhouse Lighting: Techniques and Practicalities. Purpose of the Workshop With the advent of light-emitting diode (LED) technology, the prospects of year-round commercial production of greenhouse vegetable crops, with the aid of artificial lighting, is becoming a reality. LED bulbs have a longevity and electrical efficiency that is several times better than incandescent, fluorescent and high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps. LED technology is being adopted by commercial greenhouse operations across Canada and the USA, and is projected to grow by more than 12-fold over the next decade, i.e., from $2 billion in 2014 to $25 billion by 2023. The versatility of LED lighting also extends to applications in research greenhouses, growth chambers and plant factories. This workshop will describe some of the leading-edge lighting technology available for use in commercial and research greenhouses, discuss current findings from greenhouse lighting research trials in central and western Canada, and relate the experiences of commercial growers who are using artificial lighting in their operations.Intended Audience This workshop should be of interest to commercial greenhouse growers, plant scientists, agronomists, industry representatives, interiorscape and phytotron managers, and the like.
