Colletotrichum species associated with banana anthracnose in Brazil. Brazil is the fifth-largest producer of banana (Musa spp.) worldwide, accounting for about 6.8% of overall global production, and only surpassed by India, China, the Philippines and Ecuador. The incidence of post-harvest pathogens limits the export of Brazilian fruit by reducing the resilience of the fruit to long-distance transport as well as preventing entry to its final destination due to agricultural quarantine standards.. Anthracnose is the most serious post-harvest disease of banana and is widely distributed in all the banana producing regions of the world. Recent studies based on phenotypic characterization and molecular phylogenetic analysis show that Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, C. musae, and C. siamense sensu lato are associated with anthracnose of banana. However, these reports are restricted to North America, Thailand, India and Malaysia. Given the economic importance of banana cultivation in Brazil, and the diversity of Colletotrichum species associated with other tropical crop species, the aim of this study was to determine the predominant causal agent of anthracnose on banana in Brazil. A collection of 431 Colletotrichum isolates from several banana cultivars were obtained from 29 cities across 11 Brazilian states. Screening of these isolates, based on both colony morphology and haplotype diversity at the Apn2/MAT-IGS locus, indicates the dominant post-harvest pathogen of banana in Brazil is C. musae. The remaining isolates, based on multi-locus phylogenetic analysis, are members of 6 distinct lineages within the C. gloesporioides species complex. Because C. musae is the most widely distributed post-harvest pathogen of banana in Brazil, we are working to understand its evolutionary potential, predominant reproductive strategies, and the factors that influence population structure.
