An expanded species-level phylogeny for Viburnum (Adoxaceae) and its evolutionary implications.

Viburnum is a group of woody flowering plants with ~165 species. These species primarily occur in temperate forests around the Northern Hemisphere, in tropical and montane regions of Southeast Asia, and in cloud forests in Latin America. Temperate eastern Asia and Latin America are modern centers of Viburnum species diversity, whereas Southeast Asia is the center of phylogenetic diversity. Our goal was to increase the sampling of species, with a special interest in testing proposed scenarios for character evolution and historical biogeography. We added a total of 15 species and 46 individuals primarily collected in China and Southeast Asia. Complementing prior phylogenetic studies of Viburnum, we sequenced nine chloroplast gene regions, nuclear ribosomal ITS, and a low copy nuclear gene, GBBSI (waxy). Combining these new data with published sequences, we analyzed a total of 152 Viburnum species. Phylogenetic trees were inferred using maximum likelihood implemented in Garli and Bayesian Inference using MrBayes. The resulting topology recovers all currently recognized clades of Viburnum with roughly similar levels of support. Using this tree, we verified the clade assignment of previously unsampled species that were placed using only morphology. Based on our results, V. beccarii and V. glaberrimum are transferred from the Coriacea clade to the Sambucina clade. Additionally, it appears that what has been treated as V. foetidum (Succotinus) may represent several distinct species. A comparison of age estimates based on different fossils and molecular datasets has implications for the historical biogeography of Viburnum.
