The use of auxins to enhance canola seed yield under controlled environment and Western Canadian field conditions. Heat stress conditions that occur during flowering and early fruit development of canola (Brassica napus L.) can have a substantial negative effect on seed yield, as it often leads to flower and fruit abortion. Field temperatures can be above 28oC in the Western Canadian prairies during the canola flowering period. This study tests the hypothesis that application of specific auxins to canola plants will increase seed yield under normal and heat stress conditions when the stress occurs during reproductive development. Two structurally different auxins, 4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid (4-Cl-IAA) and 4-methylindole-3-acetic acid (4-Me-IAA) were applied to canola cultivars prior to flowering (BBCH 50-52 plant growth stage) under controlled environment and Western Canadian field conditions. Under controlled environment conditions, 4-Cl-IAA (1×10-6 M) application increased seed weight per plant in cv. Peace under control (46% higher seed weight) and heat stress (51% higher seed weight) temperature treatments. Under field conditions, 4-Me-IAA at 1×10-4 M increased seed yield per plot (36%) in cv. Syngenta 4114 at the Saskatoon site under fluctuating field temperatures with lower moisture conditions during flowering in 2013. Our data also suggest that the 4-Me-IAA-induced increase in plot seed yield of cv. Syngenta 4114 at the Saskatoon site was a reflection of increased seed size (thousand kernel weight). Overall, these data suggest that application of specific auxins prior to flowering has the ability to increase seed yield in canola under controlled environment and field conditions.
