Species delimitation in the genus Pyrenodesmia.

The lichen genus Pyrenodesmia in a strict sense comprises a phylogenetically coherent group of species within the wider genus Caloplaca, which share the lack of Antraquinones and the presence of dark acetone insoluble pigments in their thalli and apothecia as diagnostic character. This genus displays an exceptionally high morphological and genetic diversities in the Eurasian continent, especially in the Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian belts. In this study based on an extensive mediterranean sampling scheme we discuss the current knowledge regarding the delimitation of Eurasian species of the genus.
