Systematics Section/ASPT Rodriguez, Jennifer [1], Wilson, Carol [2]. Phylogeny of three series of breadless Iris in Asia. Asia is home to a large number of Iris with members of fourteen of about 30 infrageneric groups present in China and Korea, the region of focus for this study. We will investigate relationships among species in three Asian series, Chinenses, Sibiricae and Tenuifoliae, from the beardless subgenus Limniris. Previous studies have not sampled comprehensively within these three series, leaving in doubt whether two of these are in the clade with other subgenus Limniris species. We will provide robust phylogenetic analyses at the series level and include newly obtained samples of these three under-represented series in analyses of the subgenus. We will amplify and sequence plastid, mitochondrial, and nuclear markers that will be selected based on genome skimming and RNAseq data obtained from previous NGS of Iris. Our goal is to advance the systematic biology of Asian Iris by creating a phylogenetic framework for taxonomic revision, and an understanding of character divergence in a system of great economic and horticultural importance.
