Physical and digital renovation of the vascular plant herbarium at Brigham Young University.

Paralleling an expansion and renovation of the Life Science Museum at Brigham Young University over the past three years, the vascular plant herbarium (~600,000 specimens) has leveraged its resources, university support, and outside funds to enhance the physical storage capacity, secure the collection, and increase the physical and digital accessibility of this important collection to a broad base of users. Enhancements include the addition of 210 herbarium cabinets in a compact storage system, databasing over 100,000 herbarium specimens, imaging over 80,000 specimens, and integration of an orphan collection into the herbarium. Other initiatives include reorganizing the collection under a system that more closely follows contemporary family circumscriptions (completed for non-seed plants, gymnosperms, and monocot angiosperms); initiating a digital synoptic collection for the state of Utah; and, focusing first on internal research at BYU, initiating a tissue archive for select taxa. To accomplish this work, twenty-one undergraduate, one graduate, and one high-school student have participated as student curators and received training in a broad spectrum of curatorial activities.
