Abstract Detail
Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Shu, Lei [1], Zhu, Rui-Liang [1]. Taxonomy and Phylogeny of Leptolejeunea (Spruce) Schiffn. Leptolejeunea is a pantropical, epiphyllous leafy liverwort genus of Lejeuneaceae, with approximately 50 extant species. Analyses of a molecular dataset including nuclear ribosomal ITS region and two chloroplast regions (trnL-trnF, rbcL), reveal that Leptolejeunea originated during Paleocene, and that a widespread extinction occurred in Leptolejeunea during climate cooling at the Oligocene and Miocene [~23 milion years ago (Ma)]. The monophyletic Leptolejeunea clade forms four lineages, and three subgenera are proposed based on molecular evidence and morphological characters. Three molecular markers (chloroplast trnL-trnF and trnG, nuclear ITS region) were used to explore the circumscription of some ill-defined species. The accessions of the widespread species Leptolejeunea elliptica (Lehm. et Lindenb.) Schiffn., is discovered to be not a monophyletic group but nested with the species from the same origin regions respectively, which suggests that the speciation process might be independent after the mass-extinction event.
