Systematics Section/ASPT Shipunov, Alexey [1], Lee, Hye Ji [2], Choi, Jin Hee [2], Connolly, Bryan [3]. Mysterious chokeberries: genus Aronia in space and time. Aronia (chockeberry, Rosaceae) is a North American genus with three species: Aronia melanocarpa, A. prunifolia and A. arbutifolia. Chokeberries are important, agriculturally promising fruit plants which also have multiple little-studied pharmaceutical applications. However, the status of Aronia species is frequently under question. So far, molecular studies of Aronia give contradictory results, probably due to the absence of properly determined vouchers. The only European species, "Aronia mitschurinii" is the most likely inter-generic hybrid which origin is yet completely clarified. This fourth species is now spreading as a common fruit culture across North America. We sequenced several DNA markers from representatives of all four species in order to clarify the taxonomy of genus and the origin of Mitchurin's Aronia. Log in to add this item to your schedule
