Botany 2015 Colloquium: Phylogenomics and the 1000 plants (1KP) initiative Wong, Gane Ka-Shu [1]. 1000 Plants (1KP): Objectives and Achievements. 1KP is an international consortium that has generated transcriptome data across the Viridiplantae (green plants). Our guiding principle was to provide exemplars for all of the major lineages known to science, representing about a billion years of evolution, including flowering plants, conifers, ferns, mosses, and streptophyte green algae. This project has increased the number of plant genes/order, relative to the totality of the existing databases, by a factor of 100 – simply because many of our species had never been subjected to large-scale sequencing before. Our initial analysis of this data set has already generated novel insights into the evolution of the Viridiplantae and, more importantly, is providing a comprehensive resource for future studies.
