Mesozoic and Cenozoic plant evolution and biotic change: A symposium in honor of Ruth Stockey

Rothwell, Gar W. [1].

Mesozoic and Cenozoic plant evolution and biotic change: Introduction to a symposium in honor of Ruth Stockey.

We are gathered today to honor Dr. Ruth A. Stockey with a celebration of her contributions to plant biology. Over more than 40 years she has immeasurably strengthened plant systematics and evolution through her pursuit of several major research agendas, by her prodigious training of students, and by her development of several new and fruitful avenues of innovation. During her 32 years of service to the University of Alberta she developed the most vigorous program of plant paleontology in Canada, curated one of the largest collections of fossil plants in North America, and came to be recognized as a major international contributor to paleobotanical inquiry. More recently, at Oregon State University, she has continued that tradition through the development of a fruitful program of research on the Mesozoic and Cenozoic biotas of western North and South America. Her accomplishments include publication of more than 170 papers in refereed journals, furtherance of her discipline through the mentoring of nine doctoral students, six master’s students, twenty-five undergraduate researchers, and one high school student, all of whom have become published authors of botanical studies, and many of whom are currently active contributors to the future of her discipline. Papers included in this symposium are by former and current students, and collaborators, and are all extensions of Ruth’s own studies of fungi, bryophytes, ferns, conifers, and flowering plants, and all emphasize her stature as an irrepressible force for scholarship and the development of botanical knowledge.
