A Checklist of the Liverworts and Hornworts of New Brunswick.

Representatives of New Brunswick liverworts have been collected and preserved in North American herbaria since the late nineteenth century, but no official checklist for the province had been published as of 2015. Here, we provide the first checklist of the liverworts and hornworts of New Brunswick, Canada. Beginning with a basic checklist generated from liverwort specimens at the Herbarium of the New Brunswick Museum (NBM), we added, reinforced, or otherwise revised records using three additional sources of information: (1) species records from associate taxa in collections from the NBM; (2) species records from published sources (e.g., ecological literature, regional or continental flora, and checklists for smaller geographic regions within the province) or from unpublished, but reliable, sources within the province (e.g., collections at research labs of the University of New Brunswick); and (3) species records from herbarium databases that are available online (University of British Columbia, Canadian Museum of Nature, and those that are available through the Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria website), and could be verified through specimen exchanges. The checklist reports over 120 species of liverworts and hornworts, many of which are under-represented in both local and out-of-province collections. We elaborate on frequency, distribution, and habitat-preferences of the species. Recent collections have considerably expanded the list of species known to inhabit the province, but targeted surveys of under-represented counties, habitats, and species-groups are needed to fully catalogue New Brunswick's liverwort and hornwort diversity.
