Ecological and evolutionary attributes of bryophytes of the boreal and arctic regions: New paradigms from interdisciplinary research

Crandall-Stotler, Barbara [1].

From Morphology to Molecules: Changing Views of Liverwort Phylogeny and Classification.

In the past 10 years, the application of molecular phylogenetic methods to systematic studies of liverworts has revolutionized their classification and challenged our interpretations of morphological evolution in the group. Early studies led to changes in ordinal and subordinal categories, but since 2009 numerous families and genera and some species have been redefined as a consequence of two interdisciplinary initiatives, Assembling the Liverwort Tree of Life (AToL) and the Early Land Plants Today Global Checklist of Liverworts (ELPT). Taxonomic rearrangements in the four largest families of boreal liverworts, i.e., the Jungermanniaceae, Lophoziaceae, Scapaniaceae and Gymnomitriaceae, will be discussed to illustrate the impact of these changes on analyses of floristic diversity in boreal and arctic communities. The genera that previously comprised these presumably related families are now placed into two different suborders and nine different families. Lophozia itself has been subdivided into as many as 14 genera, which are distributed across four families, the Scapaniaceae, Anastrophyllaceae, Cephaloziellaceae and Jungermanniaceae. Although these new taxonomic alignments have relied heavily on input from molecular phylogenetics, most are also supported by morphological data, including both gametophytic and sporophytic characters. The soon to be published "Nomenclatural Synopsis and Checklist of the Liverworts of North America," documents, with references, all currently accepted taxa in the North American flora, with updated notes on distribution.
