Molecular phylogeny of the Ononis L. (Fabaceae) species in Iran.

The genus Ononis with more than 85 annual and perennial herbaceous species is distributed in North Africa, West Asia, the Mediterranean region and Europe. In the present study, molecular phylogeny of four species and two subspecies of O. spinosa from different localities of Iran along with some other representatives were investigated. Previously, three species and subspecies belonging to the O. spinosa L. complex (i.e. O. spinosa subsp. leiosperma, O. spinosa subsp. antiquorum and O. arvensis = O. spinosa subsp. arvensis) were reported from Iran. In order to clarify the exact taxonomic position of the Iranian species within the genus and also solving the problematic issue about the exact number of O. spinosa subspecies in Iran, datasets obtained from sequencing of nuclear ribosomal ITS (nr DNA ITS) and trnL-F plastid (cp DNA) regions were analysed. Based on the maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses of the molecular datasets, and by using geographical data, it is showed that only six species and subspecies are distributed in Iran and unlike the previous reports, all Iranian Ononis spinosa complex belong to only two subspecies (i.e., subsp. leiosperma and subsp. arvensis), and O. spinosa subsp. antiquorum has wrongly been recorded from Iran.
