Celebrating More Than Three Decades of Research in Nymphaeales: A Colloquium Honoring Ed Schneider

Stevenson, Dennis [1].

Whither goeth Morphology?

Traditionally, morphology was concerned with studies on the life cycle of a species or a clade. These studies were done to elucidate the biology of a species or clade that encompassed anatomy, embryology, development of both the gametophyte and sporophyte phases, and usually some rudiments of ecology. So from seed to seed or spore to spore for bryophytes, lycophytes, and pteridophytes. The past two score of years have seen a a significant loss in the eclectic approach and its replacement with a mostly reductionist approach with narrow specialization. However, there does seem to be a trend back to broader views. The research career of Ed Schneider is an example of how to maintain an eclectic approach, successfully.
