Diversification across continents and within islands in a southern hemisphere liverwort clade.

Frullania subgenus Microfrullania is a leafy liverwort clade with representatives in southern South America, Oceania and the Malay Archipelago. We used molecular sequence data from more than 250 individuals to test species circumscriptions, determine evolutionary relationships and investigate biogeographic patterns within and among species. Several new species were discovered and the dense sampling allowed a fine-scaled interpretation of the importance of dispersal and isolation across individual islands, archipelagos and among continents. Despite a mostly Gondwanan distribution, we found evidence for multiple trans-Pacific dispersal events as well as examples of more localized diversification.
