Digital Inventory Of Forest Diseases And Fungi : An Online Database Of Forest Pathology Herbarium At Forest Research Institute, Dehradun (India).

The present era has seen an exponential increase in the growth and diversification of all forms of information, which is sometimes called as information explosion. The importance of biological specimens collections, including plant disease herbaria and living cultures of plant pathogens has been the subject matter of a number of papers and reviews published in the scientific literature. Herbaria are collections of biological specimens where dead, dried, pressed or preserved plants and fungi are permanently stored along with the related information about the specimens. The plants disease herbaria are rare in country due to the nature of specimens and plant disease taxonomy is not known. Forest diseases and fungi collections, specimens in form of herbaria are immensely useful in identification of various specimens and plants disease. Preservation of voucher specimens of plants disease resulting from biodiversity surveys is extremely important for scientific studies. Voucher specimens and their accompanying field notes document the existence of a fungus at a given place and time and provide the raw data from which taxonomic concepts are constructed. The examination of voucher specimens also provides a reliable way to verify or correct the identity of organisms recorded in surveys or used in cytological, ecological, populational, morphological, phylogenetic, and molecular studies. Scientific specimens are also a source of DNA and other compounds for phylogenetic, ecological, and other studies. This paper describes about concept, design and development of a relational database software database of plants disease specimens or forest pathology herbarium. The database software has been developed along with digital image of herbarium sheet, which keeps records of the forest pathology museum and herbarium and make it easy to access any records in less time. All the herbarium packets and sheets contain a unique barcode id. The database contains taxonomical details and searches and data retrieval is done by family, genus, species and barcode id. The main advantages of this software system is safety for material, greater processing speed, faster information retrieval, modifiable reports generation and online access from internet. This online database of is digital collections of disease and fungi of forest plants is unique in the country in that most of tree species are covered. 8550 no. of images along with their taxonomical voucher details digitized. The online database repository will be a treasure and knowledge pool for future generations and scientific society.
