Accumulation of Ureides in Response to Salt and Mannitol in Arabidopsis Seedlings.

The ureides allantoin and allantoate are nitrogenous compounds in plants derived from purine nucleotides. Ureides are used as nitrogen storage and transport compounds in plants. However, emerging evidence suggests that ureides play a role in protecting plants from abiotic stress, independent from their role in nitrogen remobilization. In this study, ureide levels and expression of ureide metabolic genes were addressed in Arabidopsis seedlings in response to treatment with NaCl and mannitol. Exposing seedlings to salt or osmotic stress caused suppression of transcripts for ureide catabolic enzymes, resulting in accumulation of the ureide compounds. An Arabidopsis T-DNA insertion mutant with constitutively high levels of ureides was used to investigate the impact of ureids on tolerance to these stressors. The mutant seedlings exhibited better growth and development under NaCl stress conditions compared to control seedlings. Additionally, mutant seedlings exhibited greater seedling weight and root length following NaCl treatment. The results indicate that ureide accumulation in seedlings might be a response to stress conditions which may be regulated, in part, at the transcriptional level. Moreover, enhanced level of ureides in Arabidopsis seedlings increases seedlings’ tolerance to abiotic stress conditions.
