Investigating species hypotheses for the Malagasy clade of the genus Psorospermum (Hypericaceae).

I investigated species hypotheses for Psorospermum species in Madagascar by integrating morphological species hypotheses and clustering of sequences in molecular phylogenetic data. Both chloroplast gene ndhF and nuclear gene ITS phylogenies shows the Malagasy Psorospermum to be monophyletic and with two well supported clades (Clade I and Clade II). Using multivariate analysis based on Gaussian mixture models implemented in Mclust R packages, I investigated the morphogroups within each clade and compared them with the molecular clusters; individuals for each taxon tip of the clades were measured for floral and vegetative characters. Mclust analyses found support for 8 morphological clusters in Clade I and 2 morphological clusters in Clade II. Morphology and molecular results match in Clade II but not in Clade I. Further samples will be added to both molecular and morphological analyses and other characters from embryo and anatomy will be investigated to clarify species boundaries.
